PDP Crisis Deepens as Bode George Condemns Atiku’s Coalition Strategy

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faces renewed internal turmoil as former Deputy National Chairman Bode George publicly criticized ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar for meeting former President Muhammadu Buhari. The controversial discussion, aimed at fostering a coalition for the 2027 elections, has sparked accusations of sidelining the PDP and prioritizing personal ambition over party unity.

Bode George Questions Atiku’s Motives Behind Mega Party Agenda

During an interview on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, Bode George expressed frustration over Atiku’s push for a coalition without consulting PDP stakeholders. He dismissed the proposed “mega party” as a tactic to weaken the PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party, and accused Atiku of treating the party like a “private fiefdom.”

“Why form a mega party when you’re part of a solid organization like the PDP? If Atiku wants a coalition, why hasn’t he discussed it within the party first?” George questioned.

Atiku’s Visit to Buhari: A Strategic Misstep?

Atiku’s visit to Buhari, a prominent All Progressives Congress (APC) figure, drew sharp criticism. George highlighted the irony of courting Buhari, who defeated Atiku in the 2019 presidential election, stating, “Buhari floored you like a little kid, yet you’re running back to him. Where are the other PDP members in this ‘northern-centric’ gathering?”

The meeting has fueled speculation about Atiku’s disregard for the PDP’s unwritten zoning agreement, which rotates presidential candidacy between Nigeria’s north and south. George warned that the move risks deepening regional divides, asking, “Is this an attempt to split Nigeria along north-south lines?”

Implications for the PDP and 2027 Elections

The rift underscores broader tensions within the PDP as it struggles to position itself against President Bola Tinubu’s APC. Atiku’s coalition strategy, perceived as self-serving, threatens to fragment opposition efforts ahead of 2027. George emphasized collective decision-making, urging: “Bring ideas to the party first. Personal ambitions shouldn’t override our unity.”

Conclusion: A Party at a Crossroads

The PDP’s ability to reconcile internal disagreements will determine its viability in the next election cycle. As Atiku’s maneuvers ignite debates about loyalty and strategy, the party must address these fissures to present a cohesive front. For now, Bode George’s outcry signals a turbulent road ahead for Nigeria’s opposition.
