The traditional institutions of Yorubaland are witnessing fresh tension as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi.

The ultimatum comes after the Ooni of Ife conferred the title of Okanlomo of Yorubaland on Ibadan-based business tycoon, Engineer Dotun Sanusi a move the Alaafin described as a violation of Yoruba tradition and authority.

Alaafin’s Warning to Ooni of Ife

According to a statement released on Monday by the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin declared that only his throne reserves the exclusive right to bestow titles that cover the entire Yorubaland.

He emphasized that:

The Supreme Court had earlier affirmed this traditional authority.

The Ooni’s authority is limited to Ife Central, Ife North, and Ife South Local Government Areas.

Any attempt to override this tradition is an affront to the revered institution of the Alaafin.

Call for Revocation Within 48 Hours

The Alaafin insisted that the Ooni must revoke the Okanlomo of Yorubaland title within 48 hours, warning that failure to comply would attract consequences.

He added that the Yoruba nation cannot achieve development without unity among its monarchs, stressing that such actions only create division and confusion.

What This Means for Yorubaland

The latest development raises critical questions about the traditional authority structure in Yorubaland and the long-standing rivalry between two of its most influential monarchs.

This clash could potentially reshape the dynamics of Yoruba traditional leadership if left unresolved.

Final Take

The coming days will determine whether the Ooni of Ife yields to the Alaafin’s ultimatum or stands firm on his decision.
