Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has shared reasons why former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, should not run in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking on Sunday Politics, a Channels Television programme, Sani argued that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer the same strong and united party that brought Jonathan to power in 2011.
According to Sani:
“Jonathan’s name always comes up whenever an election is approaching, but I advise him not to contest. The PDP he once knew is not the same today. The South-West chapter of the PDP is already endorsing the president, while other members are in coalitions. It’s not worth his time.”
Sani further stressed that although it is Jonathan’s choice to run, the current political landscape makes it unrealistic for him to mount a successful comeback.
Jonathan’s Political Journey
Goodluck Jonathan rose to the presidency on May 6, 2010, following the death of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. He later won the 2011 election on the PDP platform and served until May 29, 2015.
In 2015, Jonathan re-contested but lost to the then opposition candidate, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Big Question
As the 2027 election approaches, debates around Jonathan’s possible return continue to stir the political space. But with the PDP divided and key players shifting allegiance, many argue like Shehu Sani that the former president’s comeback bid may be an uphill battle.
