Gruesome Lynching of 16 Travellers in Edo Sparks National Outrage

In a shocking incident that has drawn nationwide condemnation, 16 hunters from Kano State were brutally lynched by a mob in Uromi, Edo State, after being falsely accused of being kidnappers. The victims, who were returning from Port Harcourt, were intercepted by a vigilante group, leading to the horrific killing of 16 while 10 others managed to escape.  

The remains of the victims were laid to rest in Uromi on Saturday, sparking grief and outrage among the northern community.  

Kano Governor Demands Public Parade of Suspects & Compensation for Families  

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has called for the public parade of the 14 suspects arrested in connection with the killings. During a condolence visit by Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, Governor Yusuf emphasized the need for justice and compensation for the bereaved families.  

“This cowardly act contradicts the fundamental principles of our society. We urge that those arrested be publicly paraded to bring relief to the victims’ families and ensure accountability,” Yusuf stated.  

He also commended President Bola Tinubu for his swift response in directing security agencies to pursue the perpetrators.  

Edo Governor Condemns Attack, Vows Justice

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, described the killings as barbaric and unacceptable, assuring that the suspects would be transferred to Abuja for further interrogation.  

“President Tinubu has ordered a thorough investigation, and we will ensure justice is served. Fourteen suspects have been arrested, and more will be apprehended,” Okpebholo said.  

He also pledged support for the victims' families, reinforcing the long-standing peaceful relationship between Edo and northern communities.  

Senate, Speakers, and Civil Society React  

Senate President Godswill Akpabio condemned the killings, calling for a thorough investigation and justice.  

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures urged better oversight of vigilante groups to prevent extrajudicial killings. 

The Esan Descendants Assembly distanced the Esan community from the act, blaming worsening insecurity in Uromi.  

Global Peace Foundation Nigeria demanded an impartial probe, warning against jungle justice.  

Police Debunk Rumors of Reprisal Attacks  

The Edo State Police Command dismissed rumors of riots in Uromi, calling them fake news aimed at inciting violence. Authorities reassured the public that investigations are ongoing, with more arrests expected.
