Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has faulted Ibom Air for imposing a lifetime ban on passenger Comfort Emmanson, who was accused of assaulting a crew member during a recent flight.

In a strongly worded statement via 𝕏 on Tuesday, titled “The Poor Must Not Be Punished While the Powerful Walk Free”, Obi described the decision as “systemically wrong and unjust,” questioning the speed and fairness of the sanction.

“The Law Should Not Only Catch the Weak” — Obi

Obi revealed that he had earlier apologised to Ibom Air and its crew for Emmanson’s misconduct, but woke up to news of her lifetime ban. He cited the ancient philosopher Anacharsis, saying:

“The law is like a spider’s web — it catches the weak, while the powerful break through with ease.”

The former Anambra State Governor stressed that while Emmanson’s actions were wrong, the punishment appeared excessively harsh compared to the way influential figures are treated when they commit more serious offences.

Double Standards in Justice

Referencing the case of Fuji music icon King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM1), Obi noted that the authorities acted with “lightning speed” against Emmanson, but the same urgency is missing when dealing with high-profile individuals.

He also questioned whether due process was followed, and whether alternative, more compassionate resolutions had been explored before the ban was announced.

Call for Equal Justice and Compassion

“It is a tragic irony that a young woman in her twenties can be banned for life, while leaders who commit far greater offences move freely without consequences. Justice must be consistent, or it becomes oppression in disguise,” Obi said.

He called for a justice system that treats all citizens equally, regardless of social or political standing, and emphasised the need for rehabilitation, understanding, and second chances when dealing with misconduct rooted in frustration or displaced aggression.

Obi concluded his statement with a prayer: “May God heal our land.”
