Sunday Jackson, a Christian farmer from Adamawa State, has been sentenced to death by the Nigerian Supreme Court for killing a Fulani herdsman, despite claims of acting in self-defence.

The Incident

In 2015, Jackson was working on his farm when a Fulani herdsman, Buba Bawuro, entered his land with cattle. A confrontation ensued, and Bawuro attacked Jackson with a knife. In self-defence, Jackson fought back and seized the knife, stabbing Bawuro in the neck, resulting in his death.

Controversy and Outrage

Human rights advocates and legal experts have condemned the court's decision, citing significant legal errors and the lack of protection for Nigerian citizens. U.S.-based attorney Emmanuel Ogebe, who has been involved in Jackson's defence, stated, “This is a sad day for Nigerians and their right to self-defence.”

Pattern of Injustice?

Jackson's case has sparked outrage beyond legal concerns, highlighting the broader issue of violence in Nigeria, particularly attacks by Fulani militias. Reports suggest that Fulani herdsmen have been responsible for thousands of deaths, often targeting Christian farming communities, yet few have faced the death penalty.

International Pressure

Human rights activists are mobilizing efforts worldwide to raise awareness about Jackson's case and pressure Nigerian authorities to grant him reprieve. The Christian Association of Nigeria has also called for clemency, with President Rev John Joseph Hayab stating, “We condemn the death sentence and ask Governor Ahmadu Fintiri to use his prerogative of mercy to grant clemency.”

A Life Hangs in the Balance

With all legal avenues exhausted, Jackson's life hangs in the balance. The only option left is an appeal for clemency from the governor of Adamawa State. Will Jackson receive a second chance, or will he face the death penalty?
