Severe Heatwave Alert: Northern States to Experience High Temperatures Up to 40°C
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a heatwave warning for Gombe State and 17 other northern states, including Abuja, Kano, Kaduna, and Sokoto.
According to NiMet’s latest weather outlook, temperatures are expected to rise above 40°C, leading to extreme thermal discomfort and potential health risks.
Affected States:
North-East:Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe
North-West: Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi
North-Central: Niger, Kogi, Nasarawa, Benue, Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Why Is This Happening?
After three days of rainfall, clear skies and high humidity are causing temperatures to soar. The combination of intense heat and moisture will make conditions feel even hotter, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and dehydration.
How to Stay Safe During the Heatwave
Gayus Musa, NiMet’s meteorological manager for Gombe State, advises residents to take urgent precautions:
✔ Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
✔ Avoid peak sun hours (12 PM – 3 PM) when temperatures are highest.
✔ Wear light, breathable clothing to stay cool.
✔ Seek shade or air-conditioned spaces when possible.
✔ Use sunscreen and protective gear (hats, sunglasses) if outdoors.
✔ Check on vulnerable groups (children, elderly, and those with health conditions).
Final Thoughts
With extreme heat expected in the coming days, it’s crucial to prioritize safety. Follow NiMet’s guidelines to avoid heat-related illnesses and stay updated on weather alerts.
Stay cool, stay safe!
