A Nigerian lady has called off her engagement after her fiancé laid down what many online have described as controlling and outrageous conditions for their marriage.

Sharing her story on TikTok, user @chiomacf revealed that her partner told her she would not be allowed to use an internet-enabled phone or access the internet at all once they were married — because he had “paid her bride price.”

According to her, he insisted she would only be given a basic torchlight phone with a new SIM card containing only his number and his family’s contacts. No social media. No friends. No job. No going out.

“He said my love should revolve around him, I should idolize him, see him as my lord and personal savior, and only do the things that make him happy,” she said. “I thought about it and realized — this is not the life I want. So I left.”

Her revelation set off a firestorm in the comments, with many praising her decision.

Reactions:
💬 Habeebat: “How was someone like that your boyfriend in the first place?”
💬 Onyinye_: “Isolation is the beginning of abuse. Smart girl, glad you left.”
💬 Madamgirll: “I can quit social media, but to idolize him? Nah.”
💬 Camzy: “Na bondage be that 😂😂😂”
💬 Olamide🖤: “Is it Big Brother Naija you want to enter? 😂”

Her story has since gone viral, sparking wider conversations about control, abuse, and women’s rights in marriage.
