The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has expressed concern over the alleged obscene and profane content in the ongoing Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality show, following a petition from activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam.

Idam, in his petition dated August 4, 2025, urged NBC to ban or restrict BBNaija’s broadcast in public spaces within 30 days or face legal action. He argued that the programme violates the NBC Act of 1999 by promoting indecent and obscene behaviour that is not suitable for public viewing.

The petition was acknowledged by Pauline Ehusani, NBC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, who confirmed the Commission’s awareness of the concerns raised.

NBC, in its response, stated:

“The Commission is equally concerned with the brazen contravention of the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code (6th Edition), which clearly prohibits the airing of obscene content. Vital decisions will be taken to ensure compliance with the rules by all concerned.”

The Commission further called on Nigerians to report and flag inappropriate BBNaija content on social media platforms to aid in prompt takedown actions.

This development comes amid increasing public debate over the influence of BBNaija on Nigerian society, with some viewers defending its entertainment value while others accuse it of promoting immorality.

NBC assured that it remains committed to upholding ethical broadcasting standards and will take necessary steps to address any breach of regulations.
