A significant political shift has occurred in Benue State, as over 5,000 members from various parties, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and Social Democratic Party (SDP), have joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Okpokwu Local Government Area. This mass defection is attributed to the ruling party's poor performance and failure to address the state's security situation.
The defectors, who were received by Senator Abba Moro, cited the APC's inability to provide effective leadership and representation as the primary reason for their decision. They expressed disappointment with the party's performance, from the federal to the state level, and praised Senator Moro for his developmental strides in Benue South.
They described Senator Moro as a rare leader who has positively impacted almost every community in the district. They commended his quality leadership and representation in the Senate, stating that he has "touched almost every community in Benue South." Senator Moro welcomed the new PDP members, assuring them of equal rights and opportunities within the party.
This mass defection is a significant blow to the APC and other affected parties in Benue State. The PDP, on the other hand, has gained a substantial number of new members, potentially boosting its chances in future elections. The event also highlights the growing dissatisfaction with the ruling party's performance and the need for effective leadership and representation.
The defection event, which took place on Monday, had a carnival-like atmosphere and was attended by key political figures, including:
- Minority Leader of the Benue State House of Assembly: Rt. Hon. Mike Audu
- Okpokwu Local Government PDP Chairman: Hon. Christopher Okpabi
Other dignitaries present at the event included leaders of the defector group, such as Onah Idoko Alexander, John Adole, Engr. Adegbo Moses, Mike Ejeba, Ocheme Candidus, and Abah Ejeh.
