The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested popular Kano-based TikTok influencer, Murja Ibrahim Kunya, for allegedly abusing and mutilating the Naira. She was reportedly apprehended at Tahir Guest Palace in Kano, where she allegedly sprayed Naira notes for fun during her hotel stay.
Kunya's arrest follows a month-long manhunt after she jumped administrative bail granted by the EFCC. She was initially arrested in January 2025 for violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and defacement of the Naira .
The social media personality was released on bail pending her arraignment before the Federal High Court in Kano but failed to appear in court, prompting the EFCC to launch a search for her. After weeks of investigation and surveillance, EFCC operatives successfully re-arrested Kunya on Sunday, March 16, 2025.
She is currently in custody at the Commission's Kano Zonal Directorate, awaiting her court appearance. The EFCC has reiterated its commitment to upholding the integrity of the Nigerian currency and warned against acts of abuse, including spraying, stamping, and mutilation of the Naira at social gatherings.
