Breaking: Lamidi Apapa Assumes Role as Labour Party Acting Chairman

In a dramatic turn of events, Alhaji Bashiru Lamidi Apapa has declared himself the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), following a Supreme Court ruling he claims supports his position.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, April 10, 2025, Apapa referenced the Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025 (Appeal No: CA/ABJ/CV/1217/2024 and Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1271/2024), which he argues nullifies all decisions made by Barrister Julius Abure since April 4, 2023.

Key Points from Apapa’s Announcement:

1. Supreme Court Ruling:Apapa stated that the apex court criticized lower courts for overstepping their jurisdiction, affirming that internal party leadership disputes are non-justiciable (cannot be decided by courts).

2. Constitutional Claim:Citing Article 14(2)(a)(b) of the Labour Party Constitution, Apapa, as the most senior Deputy National Chairman, asserted his right to take over in an acting capacity.

3. New Appointments: He named Alhaji Farouk Umar Ibrahim as the Acting National Secretary.

4. NWC Meeting Scheduled:.The National Working Committee (NWC) will meet on Monday, April 14, 2025, to discuss a new roadmap, including:

-Zoning the National Chairmanship to the North

   - Assigning the Secretary position to the South

   - Reviving the inactive Board of Trustees (BoT)

5. Grassroots Reforms: Plans are underway for fresh congresses at ward, LGA, state, and national levels, ensuring only financial members can vote or contest.

Labour Party’s Deepening Crisis

This development intensifies the leadership tussle within the Labour Party, as a rival faction loyal to Peter Obi (2023 presidential candidate) and Abia Governor Alex Otti held a separate National Executive Meeting earlier the same day.

What’s Next for the Labour Party?

- Legal Battles:Expect further court cases as Abure’s faction may challenge Apapa’s claim.

- Party Unity at Stake: The division could weaken the LP ahead of future elections.

- Grassroots Mobilization: If Apapa’s congresses proceed, they may reshape the party’s structure.

Conclusion

The Labour Party faces a critical leadership crisis, with Lamidi Apapa’s declaration adding to the turmoil. Will this lead to a reformed, united LP, or further fragmentation? The coming weeks will be decisive.
