Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the prolonged detention of 15-year-old Yusuf Alabi, who has been held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre for over three months without trial. Alabi gained national attention in 2023 for standing bravely in front of Obi's convoy during a campaign rally in Lagos, symbolizing youth hope.

Alabi was allegedly accused of being a notorious fighter and thief by local youths, who handed him over to the police. However, he maintains his innocence, stating that he recognized the youths who accused him. The accusers reportedly held a grudge against Alabi's family for not providing them with "settlement" money after he received cash gifts from Obi and socialite Cubana Chief Priest for his enthusiastic display at the rally.

Alabi has been charged with fighting and stealing, and made his first court appearance on March 27, with the next hearing scheduled for April 28. Obi has contacted lawyer Barrister Inibehe Effiong, who is actively working to intensify Alabi's release.

Obi appealed to the police and other government agents to operate within the law and rules, urging them to stop weaponizing citizens, especially youths. Effiong confirmed Obi's intervention, stating that efforts have been intensified to ensure justice and Alabi's freedom.
