Popular Nigerian crossdresser Idris Okuneye, known as Bobrisky, is at the center of a controversy surrounding his imprisonment for naira abuse. The Baale of Kirikiri Town, Chief Babalola Shabi, alleges that Bobrisky bribed officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service with ₦35 million to secure VIP treatment during his stay in prison. According to Shabi, Bobrisky smuggled eight ATM cards into the Kirikiri custodial facility and used them to funnel the money through Point of Sale operators.
Shabi claims that Bobrisky didn't serve his sentence behind bars but was instead housed in a private apartment outside the prison, arranged by complicit correctional officials. The traditional ruler discovered the scandal after inviting POS operators to his palace, leading to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's involvement. "I personally called in the EFCC after I summoned the POS operators to my palace. From there, they were able to trace the transactions and decode the money trail," Shabi said.
The officials who aided Bobrisky have been suspended, and the property where he allegedly stayed has been identified and demolished. Both the Department of State Services and EFCC have interrogated Shabi over the incident. This account contradicts a National Assembly panel report stating that Bobrisky enjoyed preferential treatment but remained within the prison premises throughout his term.
In a separate controversy, social critic Martins Otse, aka VeryDarkMan, shared a voice note allegedly from Bobrisky, claiming he paid ₦15 million to EFCC officials to drop money laundering charges. Bobrisky also alleged that a "godfather" and Nigerian Correctional Service staff ensured he served his six-month sentence in a private apartment, not in prison.
