Outrage as Nigerian Singer Paul Obukowho Dies in Police Custody

A tragic incident has sparked outrage in Delta State after 24-year-old upcoming Nigerian singer, Paul Obukowho, reportedly died in police custody. The young artist was detained by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Delta State Police Command in Asaba under controversial circumstances.

How It Happened

Obukowho had visited the RRS office to inquire about his friend, Prosper Ejiro, who was arrested earlier. Instead of assisting him, the police allegedly handcuffed, tortured, and detained him.

According to reports:

Obukowho was beaten, pepper-sprayed, and struck with wooden objects.

- He collapsed in custody and was rushed to the Police Clinic, then referred to Asaba Specialist Hospital, and later to Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Asaba, where he died in the early hours of Saturday.

Family’s Account: Extortion and Brutality

The deceased’s elder brother, Godspower Obukowho, narrated how the police:

Arrested Prosper Ejiro for wearing a black camouflage short, claiming it was reserved for security personnel.

Demanded ₦1 million bail before reducing it to ₦100,000.

Continued assaulting Paul despite his deteriorating health.

Police Response

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, claimed:

- Obukowho was arrested during a raid on a drug hotspot in Okpanam.

- He fell sick in custody and was taken to multiple hospitals before his death.

- The police insist he had a pre-existing condition (low blood sugar) and deny torture allegations.

Calls for Justice

Human rights groups, including the Young Nigerian Rights Organisation (YNRO), have demanded:

1. A full investigation into the officers involved.

2. Suspension and prosecution of those responsible.

3. Compensation for the bereaved family.

4. A public inquiry into police brutality in Delta State.

Conclusion

Paul Obukowho’s death has reignited discussions on police brutality, unlawful detention, and extortion in Nigeria. As the family seeks justice, many are calling for systemic reforms to prevent such tragedies.
