At least 16 travelers from Northern Nigeria were brutally murdered in the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State, after being mistakenly labeled as kidnappers. The victims, primarily Hausa hunters, were en route from Port Harcourt to Kano for Sallah festivities when they were intercepted by local vigilantes and an irate mob.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the mob's brutal reaction was sparked by the sight of the travelers' hunting guns, which were misinterpreted as a threat. Instead of contacting the authorities, local vigilantes raised a false alarm, leading to chaos and violence.
The attack resulted in the tragic loss of 16 lives, with some bodies trapped inside the travelers' truck, which was set ablaze by the mob. Four survivors were rescued and rushed to His Grace Hospital in Uromi for urgent medical treatment.
Authorities have confirmed the arrest of five suspects, and the Hausa community in Uromi has held an emergency peace meeting to address the situation and prevent further reprisals.
