A fiery exchange erupted between Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi and former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili at a Senate hearing on Tuesday. The hearing, convened by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, aimed to address Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's petition alleging sexual harassment by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The altercation began when petitioner Zubairu Yakubu attempted to speak out of turn, prompting Ezekwesili to intervene. Senator Nwaebonyi interjected, leading Ezekwesili to advise him to "compose himself and stop making noise." Nwaebonyi retaliated with a personal attack, calling Ezekwesili "a fool" and "an insult to womanhood." Ezekwesili countered by labeling Nwaebonyi a "hooligan," escalating the confrontation.
The dispute disrupted the hearing until order was restored. Chairman Neda Imaseun eventually announced that the matter was sub judice, leading to an adjournment of the hearing. Ezekwesili later expressed concerns about the Senate's handling of the petition, accusing them of violating the Constitution and prioritizing their own rules over the law.
