The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic death of 14-year-old student Kehinde Alade, who was shot by a stray bullet fired by a police officer on May 20. According to the command's spokesperson, Adewale Oyefeso, the incident occurred when the student's father, Odunayo Alade, was driving against traffic and attempted to evade arrest near the Airport Roundabout, Alakia-Adelubi/Airport Road.
The police enforcement team, comprising OYTMA officers and personnel of the Oyo State Police Command, had tried to stop the vehicle, a black Honda Accord with Lagos registration number FST 639 JJ. However, Alade allegedly accelerated towards the team, ramming into two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck. In the ensuing chase, a police corporal discharged a firearm aimed at the vehicle's tires, but the bullet tragically struck Kehinde, who was seated in the rear seat.
The victim was immediately rushed to the University College Hospital (UCH), where he was confirmed dead on arrival. The body has been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital mortuary for autopsy and preservation. The officer responsible for the discharge of the firearm has been taken into custody.
