The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant arrests, including an 80-year-old ex-convict and an 82-year-old grandmother, in a crackdown on illicit drug trafficking across Nigeria. According to a statement by NDLEA's Director of Media & Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, the agency's operatives arrested Ayuba Ashiru, 80, and Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, 82, along with her 32-year-old daughter Chisom Uchechi.
Ayuba Ashiru, a previous convict who served a 10-year jail term for drug dealing offenses from 2014 to 2024, was arrested again on May 14, 2025, in Kaduna State. A total of 2.3 kilograms of skunk were recovered from him. He claimed to have been involved in the illicit drug trade for 46 years.
In a separate operation, NDLEA operatives in Abia State raided the home of Mrs. Uloma Uchechi Sunday, where they recovered methamphetamine, tramadol, and skunk, along with N130,600 in cash. The grandmother confessed that she and her daughter took over the drug trade after her son, who started the business, died two years ago.
