The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Lagos Zonal Directorate has apprehended eight suspects, including two Chinese nationals, for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities in Ogere, Ogun State. The suspects were arrested during a sting operation on May 9, 2025, after the EFCC received intelligence about their illicit activities.

According to Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the EFCC, the suspects include Zhang Hang Lin and Gao Pei Hai (Chinese nationals), Matthew Mathias, Oluwaseun Amoo, Wasiu Ademola Alao, Ajibola Nurudeen, Ibrahim Yinusa, and Saidu Shuaibu. The operation was carried out with precision, and the suspects were caught red-handed.

During the operation, the EFCC recovered various items, including solid minerals, a Toyota 4Runner SUV, mobile phones, samples of suspected low-grade lithium, ATM cards, international passports, and four LED flashlights. These items are believed to be linked to the suspects' alleged illegal mining activities.

The EFCC is currently investigating the suspects and the recovered items to determine the extent of their involvement in illegal mining. The commission is also working to ascertain the economic impact of these activities and the potential environmental damage caused.

The arrest is part of the EFCC's efforts to combat economic and environmental crimes in Nigeria. The commission is committed to ensuring that those involved in such activities are brought to justice.
