Outcry Erupts Over Tragic Death of Tech Entrepreneur Adetunji Opayele
The shocking death of Adetunji “TeeJay” Opayele, 31-year-old co-founder and CTO of Nigerian e-commerce startup Bumpa, has ignited nationwide fury. Amnesty International and thousands of Nigerians are demanding accountability after a preventable collision on March 4, 2025, claimed his life under circumstances critics call “inhumane.”
What Happened to TeeJay?
On March 4, TeeJay was riding his power bike home from the gym along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Lagos’ upscale Victoria Island. According to eyewitnesses, Biola Adams-Odutayo, a healthcare professional, allegedly failed to yield while merging onto the expressway, striking TeeJay and leaving him critically injured.
Disturbingly, reports claim Adams-Odutayo refused to assist the unconscious victim, citing concerns about “blood stains” in her car. TeeJay was rushed to a nearby hospital, but staff allegedly denied him urgent care. He was later admitted to another facility, where he was declared dead after midnight.
Amnesty International: “This Crime Must Not Be Covered Up”
Amnesty International has condemned the incident, accusing Nigerian authorities of enabling injustice. In a viral X (Twitter) post, the organization stated:
“Biola Adams-Odutayo’s reckless driving killed TeeJay. Nigeria’s corrupt law enforcement is letting her get away with murder. Justice must be done.”
Adams-Odutayo was arrested and charged with reckless driving but was swiftly released on bail—a move that has fueled public distrust in Nigeria’s legal system.
35,000+ Demand Accountability in Petition A Change.org petition, backed by over 35,000 signatories, calls for:
1. A thorough investigation supervised by the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
2. Transparent prosecution of Adams-Odutayo.
3. Accountability for medical staff who allegedly refused TeeJay treatment.
Why This Case Matters
TeeJay’s death underscores systemic issues in Nigeria:
Road Safety Negligence: Reckless driving remains rampant, with weak enforcement of traffic laws.
Healthcare Failures: Denying emergency care violates ethical and legal standards.
Elite Privilege: Critics argue Adams-Odutayo’s swift bail reflects a culture of impunity for Nigeria’s wealthy.
Join the Fight for Justice
TeeJay was a rising star in Nigeria’s tech ecosystem, co-founding Bumpa—a platform empowering small businesses. His death has become a rallying cry for accountability.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”
