The Lagos State Government has issued a life-saving warning to residents of Lekki, Ikorodu, Ajegunle, and other low-lying areas: move to higher ground now before it’s too late.

With rainfall intensifying and flash floods wreaking havoc across the state, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, sounded the alarm during a live appearance on Channels Television.

“This is not a drill,” Wahab said. “If you live in flood-prone areas like Ajegunle, Majidun in Ikorodu, or parts of Lekki and Isheri (OPIC), please relocate immediately.”

This urgent warning follows heavy rains that flooded entire streets and homes earlier this week, paralyzing parts of Lagos. Viral videos show cars submerged, shops under water, and families trapped indoors.

According to NiMet (Nigerian Meteorological Agency), Lagos will face even worse rainfall this year than in 2023 — and the time to act is now.

“We won't lie to Lagosians,” Wahab added. “We can’t stop nature, but we can reduce the impact. The government is working — but we need residents to work with us too.”

While places like Epe, Mushin, and Ikeja are reportedly safer, vulnerable residents across coastlines and lowlands have been urged to move temporarily to upland areas until the rains subside.

The state has begun expanding flood paths and clearing drainages, but Wahab stressed: “Community cooperation is essential.”
