The Gombe State Government has successfully rescued a 14-year-old girl who was married off to a Taraba man as his third wife. The girl's husband has since initiated legal action against her for refusing to return after fleeing the forced marriage.

The Gombe Women Affairs and Social Development Commissioner, Asma’u Iganus, confirmed the rescue and disclosed that the minor's husband subjected her to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The commissioner emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding the rights of its citizens, especially minors subjected to abuse.

The government has mobilized a legal team to protect the child and ensure she is allowed to continue her education, which was halted after primary school. The commissioner also presented relief items to the minor, including foodstuffs, sleeping materials, and other essential support.

The 14-year-old girl narrated her ordeal, revealing that she was forced into marriage against her will and subjected to brutal treatment, including being tied up and raped by her husband and others he invited to assist him.

The Gombe State Governor and the First Lady have demonstrated their dedication to combating child rights violations and promoting the well-being of citizens. The government will challenge any proceedings that violate the girl's rights and ensure she is protected.
