The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has imposed fines totaling N628.03 million on eight Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) for violating the capping of estimated billing for unmetered customers. The affected DisCos are:

- Abuja Electricity Distribution Company

- Eko Electricity Distribution Company

- Enugu Electricity Distribution Company

- Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company

- Jos Electricity Distribution Company

- Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company

- Kano Electricity Distribution Company

- Yola Electricity Distribution Company

The fines were imposed due to the DisCos' failure to adhere to monthly energy caps issued by NERC between July and September 2024. These caps aimed to align estimated bills for unmetered customers with the consumption levels of metered customers on the same feeder.

This sanction is pursuant to Section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023. NERC has taken a firm stance to protect consumers from overbilling, emphasizing the importance of compliance with regulatory guidelines .

The issue of estimated billing has been a major source of complaints among electricity consumers in Nigeria, with many accusing DisCos of exploiting them with arbitrary charges. NERC has introduced measures to address this, including the capping of estimated bills, to ensure fairness and accuracy in billing practices.
