Labour Party to Expel Peter Obi Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities

In a dramatic political twist, the Labour Party has revealed plans to expel its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, over alleged anti-party activities and dual allegiance to rival coalitions.

The announcement was made during a televised interview on Channels TV by National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025. According to Arabambi, the party's National Executive Council (NEC) will soon convene to officially recommend Obi’s expulsion, a move that will be finalized at the party's upcoming national convention.

“We are convening a NEC meeting where he (Peter Obi) will be expelled,” Arabambi said. “You don’t join a political party and at the same time pledge loyalty to another. It’s unconstitutional and a clear case of anti-party behavior.”

Arabambi claimed Obi had been previously suspended and is now engaging in activities that violate the party's constitution, including alleged alignment with what he described as a “yahoo yahoo coalition.”

“Obi is no longer a member of our party. He can’t claim to be Labour while collaborating with outside political groups. We will not tolerate that,” he added.

Peter Obi, who garnered over 6.1 million votes in the February 2023 presidential election and came in third, is reportedly aligned with a rival faction of the Labour Party led by Senator Usman Nenadi, which includes Governor Alex Otti.

Meanwhile, Arabambi is part of the faction loyal to Julius Abure, who currently controls the official party secretariat. This group had earlier suspended notable members such as Governor Otti, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and Senator Darlington Nwokocha, accusing them of anti-party conduct.

As internal divisions widen, the Labour Party's leadership crisis poses significant questions about its direction and stability ahead of future elections.
