Rashidi Ladoja Set to Become Next Olubadan of Ibadanland After Oba Olakulehin’s Passing

The ancient city of Ibadan stands at the cusp of another historic transition as all eyes now turn to Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, who is expected to ascend the revered throne as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.

This development follows the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90 just two days after celebrating both his birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation.

A Royal Legacy: Oba Olakulehin’s Reign

Oba Olakulehin received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde on July 12, 2024, succeeding Oba Lekan Balogun. Though his reign lasted just over a year, it was deeply symbolic, blending tradition with modern leadership. His burial arrangements are expected to be announced soon by the Olubadan-in-Council.

Ladoja: A Statesman on the Brink of Royalty

Senator Rashidi Ladoja, born September 25, 1944, is not just a respected elder in Ibadan but also a well-known national political figure. He served as Governor of Oyo State from 2003 to 2007, and despite remaining active in Nigerian politics, he has steadily climbed the rungs of the Ibadan chieftaincy system, specifically through the civil line, where he currently holds the title of Otun Olubadan the most senior high chief.

With Oba Olakulehin's passing, Ladoja now stands as the rightful heir, based on the unique rotational succession system that governs Ibadan’s traditional institution.

Understanding the Ibadan Succession System

Ibadan’s traditional monarchy stands out as one of the most orderly and predictable in Nigeria. Unlike many Nigerian royal institutions where heredity determines succession, the Olubadan stool rotates between two lines:

The Egbe Agba (Civil Line)

The Balogun (Military Line)

Chieftaincy titles are earned over decades, and progression is determined by seniority and merit rather than royal birth. Once a titleholder rises to the top of either line, and the reigning Olubadan passes away, the highest-ranking chief in the alternate line becomes the new Olubadan.

This system, established to maintain stability and fairness, ensures a smooth transition of power something often lacking in other traditional structures across the country.

What Happens Next?

Sources within the Olubadan-in-Council have confirmed that discussions are already underway to formalize Ladoja’s nomination. Once the position is officially declared vacant and consensus is reached, the final approval will lie with Governor Seyi Makinde and the Oyo State Executive Council.

Traditionally, the state governor presents the staff of office, marking the formal ascension of the new Olubadan.

If all goes as expected, Ladoja will become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, making him the first former civilian governor of a Nigerian state to be crowned as a first-class monarch in modern history.

A Moment of Pride for Ibadan and Nigeria

Ladoja’s anticipated coronation is already drawing attention beyond Ibadan. Many have described it as a “full-circle moment” a respected political leader returning home to wear the crown of his ancestors.

His ascension is seen not only as a significant cultural event but also as a moment of pride for the people of Ibadan, a city rich in heritage and known for producing statesmen, scholars, and traditional leaders of note.

What Does This Mean for the Future?

As Ladoja steps into this new chapter, many are curious to see how his leadership experience in governance will influence his royal duties. The merging of political savvy with deep-rooted traditional wisdom could signal a new era for Ibadanland.

What are your thoughts on a former governor becoming king? Do you see this as a turning point for Ibadan and traditional institutions in Nigeria?
