NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore have embarked on their journey back to Earth after a nine-month stint at the International Space Station (ISS). Their extended stay was due to an unprecedented technical issue in space. This has however added them to a list of astronauts who have had their space missions extended
Some notable examples of extended space missions include:
Sergei Krikalev's journey to space began on May 18, 1991, when he boarded the Mir, the Soviet Union's space station at the time. Little did he know, his stay would be extended by almost five months due to the Soviet Union's disintegration and financial struggles in Moscow. This unexpected turn of events earned him the nickname "the last Soviet citizen." Krikalev spent a total of 313 days in space, returning on March 25, 1992.
Fast forward to 2003, three astronauts - Ken Bowersox, Donald Pettit, and Nikolai Budarin - had to prolong their stay on the International Space Station by about three months. This was due to the Columbia disaster, which led to NASA suspending its space shuttle flights. The three astronauts eventually landed back on Earth in a Russian capsule in May 2003.
More recently, in 2022, American astronaut Frank Rubio headed to the International Space Station for a six-month stay, but ended up staying for just over a year - 371 days. This became the longest single spaceflight for a U.S. astronaut. Rubio's return trip was delayed due to a coolant leak in the Russian spacecraft, and he had to wait for a different spacecraft to pick him up. As Rubio noted, being ready for the unexpected is a mindset that's essential for astronauts, much like those serving in the military.
Extended space missions can occur due to various unforeseen circumstances. Astronauts are prepared to adapt to changing situations, whole space agencies develop contingency plans in place to ensure their safety.
