Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court, Ilorin convicted and sentenced two Chinese, Yang Chao and Wu Shan Chuan to prison for illegal mining of solid minerals in Kwara State.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arrested the suspects for suspected illegal mining activities. They were trailed to their location at No. 1, Idi Ope Road, along Ogunmakin-Odede Road, where they were found to be engaged in illegal mining of solid minerals.

Having found the defendants guilty, Justice Awogboro convicted and sentenced them to two years imprisonment each or to pay N1 million fine respectively. The N1 million fine was also extended to the company. They are also to remit the sum of N14million in royalties to the federal government along with all solid minerals found in the premises of the company

The conviction and sentencing of Yang Chao and Wu Shan Chuan serve as a warning to others involved in illegal mining activities in Nigeria. The country has been grappling with the issue of illegal mining, which has led to environmental degradation, economic losses, and social problems.

The Nigerian government has been taking steps to curb illegal mining, including the establishment of the Minerals and Mining Act, which regulates the mining industry. The government has also set up task forces to monitor and enforce compliance with mining regulations.
