The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully destroyed counterfeit and expired drugs worth over ₦100 billion at the Moniya dump site in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State. This major action underscores NAFDAC's ongoing efforts to combat the distribution of harmful and substandard products across Nigeria.

Speaking at the destruction event, NAFDAC Director General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to ensuring the safety and efficacy of food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, chemicals, packaged water, and beverages.

“As the lead agency and chair of the Federal Task Force on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs, NAFDAC is determined to rid Nigeria of harmful and substandard products,” she said.

NAFDAC's Strict Regulations on Pharmaceutical Products

Prof. Adeyeye, represented by NAFDAC’s Director of Narcotics and Controlled Substances, Yedunni Adenuga, highlighted that the agency has implemented stringent regulations for licensing, selling, and distributing pharmaceutical products in Nigeria. These efforts are aimed at preventing fake drugs from entering the market and ensuring public safety.

Crackdown on Illegal Drug Markets in Nigeria

NAFDAC also emphasized its recent enforcement actions in major drug markets across Nigeria, including Idumota (Lagos), Onitsha (Anambra), Ariaria (Abia), and Ezeukwu (Abia). These raids were supported by the National Security Adviser and involved over 1,000 security personnel, including members of the Military, Police, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Seizure of Banned and Unregistered Drugs

Among the illegal drugs seized during the raids were:

  • Tramadol 225mg (a controlled substance commonly abused)
  • Analgin (a banned painkiller in Nigeria)
  • Other unregistered and substandard pharmaceutical products

NAFDAC warns that such substances pose serious health risks and contribute to insecurity in Nigeria.

Suspects Arrested and Investigations Underway

Several suspects were arrested during the three-week-long crackdown, and investigations are currently ongoing. NAFDAC assured the public that those found guilty will face prosecution and be sanctioned in accordance with the law.

The agency has urged the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious drug distribution activities to help protect public health and security.
