Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has criticized former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his remarks on poverty in Nigeria. Sanwo-Olu accused Obi of lacking the moral right to criticize Nigeria's poverty situation, citing his poor record in Anambra.

In a statement titled "Factually Addressing Mr. Peter Obi's Criticism of Nigeria at Johns Hopkins University," Sanwo-Olu said Obi contributed to the increase in poverty in Nigeria during his tenure as Anambra Governor. He claimed that poverty in Anambra increased from 41.4% to 53.7% during Obi's two-year term.

Sanwo-Olu contrasted Obi's record with that of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who he said reduced poverty by over 46% during his tenure as Lagos State Governor. He also highlighted Tinubu's achievements in education, healthcare, and credit facilities, saying the President has built over 200 schools and provided student loans to over 200,000 undergraduates.

The governor questioned Obi's credibility, saying he "de-marketed" Nigeria abroad and made statements he had no moral standing to make. Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of projecting Nigeria positively on the global stage, rather than criticizing the country abroad.
