The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has initiated a fire safety sensitization campaign in markets and public places in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to reduce the increasing cases of fire outbreaks. According to the FCT Fire Service, at least 150 fire outbreaks have been recorded between January and April this year, prompting the agency to take proactive measures.
The campaign, which kicked off at the Garki Model market in Abuja, aims to educate market people on fire prevention and response measures. The Head of NEMA Abuja Operation Office, Zakari Abubakar, emphasized the importance of fire safety, saying, “Fire can be our friend, but it can also turn out to be our enemy if not properly managed.”
Abubakar highlighted key measures to prevent fire outbreaks, including switching off appliances after business hours, ensuring proper wiring and ventilation, and purchasing genuine fire extinguishers. He also stressed the need for fire exits and escape plans, fire-resistant walls, and safe storage of flammable materials.
The campaign will be extended to schools, offices, churches, mosques, and other public places to sensitize people on fire safety and prevention. Deputy Controller Segun Akinola from the FCT Fire Service noted that the campaign is crucial, given the high number of fire outbreaks recorded in the FCT.
Akinola disclosed that the FCT has recorded over 150 fire outbreaks in the last four months, with cases reported from the six area councils. He expressed hope that the campaign would lead to a reduction in fire outbreaks across the FCT and the country.
