Workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have commenced an indefinite strike, withdrawing all meteorological services nationwide. The strike, which began at 7:00 a.m., has seen NiMet staff and union members protesting at the agency's premises, holding placards and demanding better working conditions.

The workers are lamenting the poor welfare package, citing low salaries and allowances compared to their counterparts in sister agencies. A staff member highlighted that while management staff in NiMet earn ₦470,000, their counterparts in other agencies earn significantly more, around ₦1.2 million.

The workers are calling on the government to review their conditions of service, citing the sensitive nature of their work in providing meteorological services to various industries, including agriculture, transportation, and marine. They argue that their welfare package is inadequate, making it difficult for them to afford basic necessities like transportation, rent, and school fees for their children.

The Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees, Paul Ogohi, condemned the current system, highlighting the toll it is taking on NiMet staff. The strike is expected to have far-reaching implications for various sectors that rely on NiMet's services.
