Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has announced the discovery of commercially viable petroleum deposits in the state, marking a significant milestone in the state's economic development. The announcement was made during a reception honoring Abubakar Shettima, the newly appointed Managing Director of the Rima River Basin Development Authority.
Harnessing Natural Resources for Economic Growth
Governor Idris emphasized Kebbi State's rich mineral resources, including petroleum, and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to utilizing these resources for economic growth. The state has already identified over 30 mineral deposits, including ¹:
- Limestone: Found in Jega
- Iron Ore: Discovered in Gwandu
- Bauxite: Located in Suru and Dandi
- Coal: Found in Birnin Kebbi
- Kaolin: Deposits in Koko, Bagudo, Argungu, and Dandi
Boosting Agricultural Productivity
The governor also pledged to continue providing support to farmers, including free fertilizers, farming inputs, implements, and improved seeds, to boost agricultural productivity. Kebbi State is a significant producer of various crops, such as:
- Groundnuts: Kebbi is one of the leading producing states in Nigeria
- Wheat: Grown in the northern states, including Kebbi
- Sorghum: Kebbi is among the top sorghum-producing states in Nigeria
- Cotton: Grown in the Savannah belts of the country, including Kebbi
New Leadership and Partnerships
The appointment of Abubakar Mallam Shettima as the Managing Director of the Rima River Basin Development Authority was also highlighted, with Governor Idris expressing confidence in his ability to deliver based on his experience as a retired paramilitary officer and respected politician. Shettima has pledged his loyalty and commitment to the administration, having previously contested for the governorship of Kebbi State in 2007 and 2011.
