Tinubu to Nigerians in Saint Lucia: "We Rescued the Economy, Now Let’s Build Together"
During a heartwarming interactive session at the Windjammer Resort in Castries, Saint Lucia, President Bola Tinubu addressed members of the Nigerian diaspora, delivering an optimistic message: Nigeria is no longer on the edge it’s on the rise.
Speaking with Nigerian professionals, students, and religious leaders, President Tinubu acknowledged the harsh economic reality he inherited, describing Nigeria as "near bankruptcy" when he assumed office. However, he confidently declared that his administration has taken bold steps to rescue and stabilize the nation’s economy.
“We inherited a country that was near bankruptcy. But we have been able to rescue the economy. Nigeria has recovered,” Tinubu told the audience.
“We have made the smuggling of our oil unattractive and stopped chasing forex papers at the Central Bank.”
A Candid Conversation with the Diaspora
Organized by Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), the forum offered a rare chance for Nigerians abroad to engage directly with the President.
The discussion was heartfelt and practical. Nigerians in Saint Lucia raised key concerns:
High cost of work permits (up to $2,500 annually)
Lack of a Nigerian diplomatic mission on the island
In response, Tinubu gave a firm assurance that diplomatic channels were already being activated to address these issues.
Celebrating Nigerian Excellence Abroad
Dr. Olugbemisola Ogunlusi, a paediatrician who moved to Saint Lucia two decades ago, praised the President's visit and shared her family’s success story. Her children, now doctors themselves, are living proof of the Nigerian spirit of excellence.
Father Festus Iwuagwu, a well-known Nigerian priest in Saint Lucia, noted the large turnout as a sign of respect and affection for the President.
“For the professionals living here, our government will not abandon you. But you must work hard. It is our job to help you succeed,” Tinubu said.
He encouraged the diaspora to be ambassadors of Nigeria, uphold good conduct, and continue flying the nation’s flag high abroad.
A Portrait of Patriotism
As a token of appreciation, the Nigerian community presented President Tinubu with a custom portrait designed by Doris, a talented medical student and visual artist. It was a fitting tribute to a visit filled with unity, dialogue, and renewed hope.
Tinubu’s Message: Stay Focused, Stay Positive
Reflecting on his own journey from a student in the U.S. over 50 years ago to becoming Nigeria’s President, Tinubu left the audience with a timeless lesson:
“Life is about working hard, being consistent.”
Final Thoughts
President Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia wasn’t just a diplomatic tour it was a heartfelt connection with Nigerians who continue to shine abroad. With his firm assurance that the economy is on the path to recovery, and that diaspora voices matter, the message is clear: the future of Nigeria is being shaped both at home and abroad.
Let’s build a better Nigeria together.
